TANGLED IN THE PORN WEB
Pornography sales now exceed $10 billion annually in the U.S. and $56 billion over the world. Porn use - specifically Internet porn - is on the rise and is claiming a high price: lost jobs, failed marriages, and destroyed families. Pastors and other Christian leaders are no less vulnerable to this addiction. In August 1999, 11 percent of the calls received on Focus on the Family's Pastoral Care Line were about pastors and online porn. In August 2000, online porn worries prompted 20 percent of the calls. Almost 10 percent of calls are from women. Many female sex addicts get hooked through X-rated chat-rooms. Pornography has become one of the most profitable ventures on the Internet with obscene profits soaring. Editor's note: If you have any sense at all you will monitor this with all diligence lest your home fall prey. I Corinthians 15:33, "Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. "
SCHOOL SHOOTER STOPPED BY ARMED GUARD
A brave armed police guard ended the latest in a plague of shooting incidents in public schools in America. When 18-year-old Jason Hoffman got out of his car on March 22 and starting shooting students at the Granite Hills High School in El Cajon, California, police officer Richard Agundez engaged him in a gunfight. Hoffman was hit twice and thus was unable to continue his shooting rampage. Officer Agundez's brave actions probably saved many lives. There are 2,900 students at Granite Hills, and Hoffman had two guns. Contrary to liberal thinking, guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens are an important aspect of crime prevention in America. There is less violent crime in states that permit law-abiding citizens to carry concealed weapons. The idea that criminals commonly take guns away from armed citizens and use those guns against them is a myth. Professional studies have shown repeatedly that guns are used more to stop crime than to commit crime.
Some Things Just Don't Change
There is no such thing, at this date of the world's history, in America, as an independent press.... The business of the journalist is to destroy the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to vilify, to fawn at the feet of mammon, and to sell his country and his race for his daily bread.. . . . We are the tools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes. -- John Swinton (1829-1901), managing editor of the New York Times during the Civil War and later of the New York Sun, in a speech to journalists in New York, c. 1880.
Trumpet Tour to Israel
The March Bible Trumpet Tour to the Holy Land had 29 in the group originating from Maryland to Florida . This year we went to the Seven Churches in Asia which are in Turkey and Patmos which is in Greece. It was a beautiful sight to see the ruins of Ephesus and Laodica. I now understand the wording of the Scripture when Jesus said that you were neither hot nor cold, but lukewarm. There is a warm water spring at the top of the mountain over Laodicea. It is a highly mineralized water spring. It looked like icy cliffs because of the minerals.
The tourism was down in Israel because of all the negative publicity. But it worked to our advantage. Where there were usually a large number of buses, there were only two or three. This allowed us to get in and out of the sites and also allowed us more time to meditate in certain areas. The people in Israel welcomed us and thanked us for coming. There were no problems of any kind. We should not let others control us with scare tactics. If it were unsafe to travel to Israel the US State Department would have stopped the traveling.
The November tour will be an Israel only trip. We will be leaving around the first week of November. The March tour will probably be back to the Seven Churches in Asia.
