On October 12, Jerry Falwell apologized for the statement he made earlier that Mohammed was a violent man and a terrorist. Falwell said: "I sincerely apologize that certain statements of mine made during an interview for the September 30 edition of CBS's "60 Minutes' were hurtful to the feelings of many Muslims. I intended no disrespect to any sincere, law-abiding Muslim." Falwell's previous statement about Mohammed led to riots in some parts of India that left at least nine people dead.
This is not the first time in the last year Mr. Falwell has made a bold statement only to quickly apologize for it. You will remember the remarks he made in the days after the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001. At that time, he and Pat Robertson suggested that the terror attacks could be a part of the judgment of God on America for the wholesale acceptance of the sodomites, and the wanton slaughter of millions of unborn babies. When those remarks created a stir, he and Mr. Robertson both apologized in spite of the fact that what they said was true. Now he is apologizing again for true statements. I suppose it will be necessary for us to listen to Mr. Falwell and then wait and see if he plans to retract his statements before we decide what we think of what he's said.
