Great Thoughts
What Does Saved Mean?
From Spurgeon's sermon – "The Withered Hand" (vol. 25, #1485, page 412). "Oh," say you, "we truly wish to be saved." I do not think so, for what do you mean by being saved? Do you mean being saved from going down to hell? Everybody, of course, wishes that. Did you ever meet a thief that would not like to be saved from going to prison or being locked up by the policeman? But when we talk about salvation, we mean being saved from the habit of wrong-doing; being saved from the power of evil, the love of sin, the practice of folly, and the very power to find pleasure in transgression. Do you wish to be saved from pleasurable and gainful sins? Find me the drunkard who sincerely prays to be delivered from drunkenness. Bring me an unchaste man who pines to be pure. Find me one who is a habitual liar and yet longs to speak the truth. Bring me one who has been selfish and who in his very heart hates himself for it, and longs to be full of love and to be made Christ-like. Why, half the battle is won in such cases.
*****
Dr. Talmadge tells the story that one day while he was bothering his theological professor with questions about the mysteries of the Bible, the latter turned on him and said: “Mr. Talmage, you will have to let God know some things you don’t.” Surely sometimes when we can’t track God on our radar we can just trust that He is there and that He knows what He is doing.
Baptist Bible Trumpet On-line Changes
Heretofore the on-line version of the Trumpet has been freely available and it has become a very popular Internet site. We are very glad to have picked up many new readers through this ministry, but we have started to lose subscriptions to the printed version of the Trumpet as people have found they can get the same content for free on-line. We cannot afford to do this and continue publication. The subscription fees we collect do not currently cover the cost of publication, let alone allow for planned expansion of the paper. For this reason we have forced to publish two separate version of the Trumpet On-Line.
The version you are currently reading will continue to be free. It is however a limited version. The announcements and brief news articles and one or two feature articles will appear in this version.
The second version will contain all of the articles that appear in the printed version. The full version of Trumpet On-line will be available through an annual subscription fee of only $7.00
We have set up a convenient subscription form here on the new web site ( The new site was donated - $0 - not paid for with subscription fees. )
